Throwing it back ... this is how long it has taken me to write a blog post for this stunning Hertfordshire barn wedding ... this is one of my very first local Hertfordshire weddings and the wonderful couple who I knew through my hockey club. If you're looking at a winter Barn wedding then read on.

Hannah and Andrew were married at Milling Barn with their nearest and dearest — and what a celebration it was. They really channelled the YOU DO YOU vibe and I am absolutely here for it. With Scottish nods to Andrew's heritage; from thistles and kilts to a ceilidh for the evening and the most stunning winter aesthetics, it was such a joy to capture their day. As a Hertfordshire wedding photographer, I absolutely love seeing couples fill their wedding with personal touches, and Hannah & Andrew’s wedding was full of them… including a rock climbing-inspired cake that completely stole the show!

Hannah was super chill in the getting ready suite and the winter aesthetics were stunning.

Hannah wore a stunning fitted dress with delicate lace with a winter red knitted stole.

The atmosphere was relaxed but full of joy — exactly how a wedding should feel. The morning was full of laughter as Hannah got ready with her bridesmaids, sipping prosecco while the winter sun streamed through the windows. Meanwhile, Andrew and his groomsmen donned traditional kilts, bringing that timeless Scottish flair to the day.

A Winter Wedding at Milling Barn

Milling Barn in Buntingford is such a beautiful venue all year round, but in winter it feels especially cosy and romantic. The exposed beams, warm fairy lights and rustic charm make it the perfect setting for a winter wedding. Hannah and Andrew embraced the season with deep greens and eucalyptus, soft whites and pops of winter Red, which tied perfectly into Andrew’s Scottish roots.

Milling barn has some stunning spots to take couples for their shoots.

After the ceremony, we explored some of Milling Barn’s gorgeous surroundings for couple portraits — and even in winter, the setting was full of charm. The open fields next to the barn make the perfect backdrop, especially when the winter sun dips low and gives everything that golden glow. The wooden barn doors, the fairy-lit Christmas tree and even the some of the farm outbuildings all provide stunning textures for photographs. Hannah and Andrew were such naturals in front of the camera, and it was lovely to capture them being them and laughing together. Milling Barn really is a dream location for a Hertfordshire wedding photographer, with so many spots to create timeless, romantic images whatever the season.

Personal Touches Make the Day

One of my favourite parts of being a Hertfordshire wedding photographer is seeing how each couple puts their unique stamp on their wedding. Hannah and Andrew really leaned into what they love and what reflects them as a couple.

The flowers were full of texture; thistles, eucalyptus, winter berries, creating a bouquet that felt natural, seasonal and meaningful.

But the detail that really stood out? Their incredible rock climbing wedding cake. Both Hannah and Andrew love climbing, and they worked with a talented baker to create a cake that looked like a cliff face, complete with little sugar climbers scaling to the top. It was such a fun and unexpected detail, and their guests absolutely loved it.

After heartfelt speeches and a delicious winter feast, the evening kicked off with a ceilidh — and it was everything you’d hope for. There’s nothing like a ceilidh to get everyone on the dancefloor, from little kids to grandparents. The energy was infectious, with guests laughing, spinning and trying to keep up with the steps. It was the perfect way to round off such a personal and joy-filled day.

Testimonial from Hannah for their wedding

"Sam was absolutely fab, made us feel so at ease even though we're not massive fans of PDA and photos. The engagement shoot was a really great practice, plus we got some special photos from it. Sam captured so many lovely, natural photos of both us and our guests throughout the wedding day, and was very attentive to our wishes. Thank you Sam!!"
